Ampira Energy is recruiting a Battery Systems Engineer for a leading industrial energy storage client operating across the UK. This contract role supports the design, development, and deployment of grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The successful candidate will bring hands-on experience in battery cell characterisation, BMS development, or BESS system integration, and will contribute to a programme that is directly supporting the UK's net-zero transition.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop battery energy storage systems (BESS) for grid-scale and industrial applications
  • Lead or support Battery Management System (BMS) development and validation activities
  • Conduct battery cell characterisation, testing, and performance analysis
  • Perform system-level integration and commissioning of BESS installations
  • Develop and maintain battery system models for performance prediction and optimisation
  • Produce technical documentation including system specifications, test plans, and safety assessments
  • Support compliance activities against relevant standards (IEC 62619, BS EN 62933, UL 9540)

Essential Requirements

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Proven experience in battery systems engineering — BESS, EV, or aerospace battery applications
  • Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery chemistry, cell characterisation, and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with BMS hardware and software development
  • Familiarity with battery safety standards (IEC 62619, UN 38.3, or equivalent)
  • Strong analytical skills and experience with battery modelling tools
  • Excellent technical communication and documentation skills

Desirable

  • Experience with grid-scale BESS commissioning and grid connection (G99)
  • Knowledge of thermal management systems for battery packs
  • Familiarity with IEC 61508 functional safety for industrial systems
  • Experience with Python or MATLAB for battery data analysis
  • Exposure to second-life battery applications

What's on Offer

  • Competitive day rate: £480–£620 depending on experience
  • 6–12 month initial contract with strong extension prospects
  • Work on projects directly supporting the UK's net-zero energy transition
  • UK-wide role with flexible working arrangements
  • Opportunity to develop expertise in one of the fastest-growing engineering disciplines
