Principal Electric Machine
Design Engineer

South East, England Permanent Posted April 2026

About the Role

Our client, an engineering organisation specialising in electric machines and power conversion technologies, is seeking a Principal Electric Machine Design Engineer to lead the design and optimisation of motors and generators.

This role involves working across electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal domains, supporting development activities from concept through to production, while collaborating closely with engineering and manufacturing teams.

What You'll Be Responsible For

  • Lead the design, development, and optimisation of electric machines across electromagnetic, mechanical, and thermal domains
  • Carry out detailed analysis using ANSYS MotorCAD and ANSYS Maxwell, with exposure to FEA-based mechanical and CFD tools
  • Develop analytical calculations to validate machine sizing, performance, efficiency, losses, and NVH behaviour
  • Support proposal activities as part of technical work package delivery from concept through to production
  • Interpret customer specifications and convert them into machine topologies and design concepts
  • Lead or support DFMEA activities, ensuring appropriate risk identification and mitigation
  • Work with manufacturing teams to support winding processes, lamination inspection, assembly, and prototype builds
  • Support validation and qualification testing including electrical, mechanical, and thermal testing
  • Produce detailed engineering outputs including design documentation, DFMEA artefacts, test plans, and reports
  • Prepare and review 2D/3D CAD models, detailed drawings, and Bills of Materials (BOMs)
  • Support the generation of verification and validation evidence for design reviews and customer programmes

Essential Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in electric machine design (e.g. PMM, BLDC, BLAC, RFM, AFM)
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory, machine topology selection, magnetic materials, thermal management, and structural considerations
  • Proficiency with MotorCAD and ANSYS Maxwell
  • Experience with DFMEA, failure analysis, and technical risk management methodologies
  • Practical experience working with prototype hardware and manufacturing environments
  • Ability to interpret requirements and develop effective machine-level design solutions
  • Strong communication, documentation, and teamwork skills
  • Ability to work within engineering processes, configuration control, and quality systems
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Proactive and collaborative approach within a multi-disciplinary environment

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within aerospace, defence, automotive electrification, or other high-reliability sectors
  • Familiarity with mechanical FEA tools, including structural, thermal, and CFD analysis
  • Knowledge of NVH, thermal systems, or advanced materials
  • Experience with design-for-manufacture and production processes
  • Exposure to scripting or AI-related tools
